East China Normal University (ECNU) was founded in October 1951, based on the former Greater China University and Guang Hua University. ECNU was one of the first 16 national Key Universities in 1959 and this was reaffirmed in 1978. ECNU was also one of the first 33 higher education institution authorized by the State Council to establish their graduate faculties in 1986. In 1996, ECNU became one of the universities of "Project 211". In 2006, ECNU became a member of the "Project 985".

ECNU is a comprehensive research university and currently it is made up of 19 full-time schools and colleges, 4 advanced research institutes and 2 management institutes, with 55 departments offering 67 undergraduate programs. ECNU is designated as one of the National Liberal Arts and Basic Sciences Training and Research Bases in its disciplines of Chinese, History, Mathematics, Geography, Psychology and Physics. The university is authorized to offer 136 doctoral programs covering 14 Primary Disciplines, 18 post-doctoral mobile research stations, 2 national key laboratories and 6 key centers of education by the Ministry of Education, etc. The university sponsors or supervises publication of more than 20 academic journals and periodicals. The collection of the library has exceeded 3.9 million volumes. Besides, there are 17 primary or secondary schools are affiliated to the university.
